National Children's Dental Health Month (NCDHM)
General Overview
The annual observance of children's dental health began as a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio on February 3, 1941. During that year, February 3-7 was designated as Children's Dental Health Week in Akron, Ohio.
The American Dental Association held the first national observance of Children's Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949. This single day observance became a week-long event in 1955. In 1981, the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Children's Dental Health Month.
Since 1941, the observance has grown from a two-city event into a nationwide program. NCDHM messages reach millions of people in communities across the country and at numerous armed service bases abroad. Local observances often include poster, coloring, and essay contests, health fairs, free dental screenings, museum exhibits, classroom presentations and dental office tours.

What Does Your Local Society Do For NCDHM?
Dentists With A Heart Give Kids A Smile
February is the nationally recognized Children’s Dental Health Month. The Santa Clara County is typically involved in several events to help and educate our community’s children. One of the largest events that is recognized locally and has been honored at the State Assembly level is the Dentists With A Heart Day. On this day, some of our members, usually between 30-50 dentists, donate either a partial or full day to treat underprivileged children for free. Last year close to 500 children were treated. This event provides a great service to those children who might not otherwise be able to see a dentist. For some it is simply prevention (sealants) and education about caring for their teeth. For others it can change their entire life and self esteem for those with visible decay and deformities. It is a valuable service for the patients and a rewarding experience for the dentists.
The second event that the Society sponsors is the elementary school poster contest. Every year for the last 3 years we have asked surrounding elementary schools to participate. This year we asked second grade classes to submit posters on the topic of “A Healthy Smile is Always in Style.” We feel that this project helps the children to think about what they must do in order to maintain a healthy smile, and also, it’s just fun! There are prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. For those classes with a winning artist, one of our members of our Community Relations Committee will bring the prize and also toothbrushes and toothpaste for the whole class.
