2008 President Dr. Diane Casey Installation Speech

Good evening everyone! I’m so pleased that so many people are here and I hope you are already starting to have a fabulous time! Thank you for the honor of being allowed to serve as President of the Santa Clara County Dental Society and special thanks must go to Dr. Don Call as my installing officer. He and so many inspired leaders before me have shaped our Society into the strong and dynamic group we are today. Please give yourselves a hand!

I am truly happy so may of the most important people in my life could be here today: my family, my office family and friends, colleagues and leaders who have taught me by example. Without their help, support and encouragement I know that I would not be here today, and I would like to thank them all in advance for their time and sacrifice that will come in 2008. And I thank each and everyone here, as you honor me with your presence.

SCCDS has flourished for over 100 years and we have a solid foundation built on service, respect, leadership and professional character. As a junior leader I have had many opportunities to listen to our Society, go to meetings and participate in activities. In the words of Yogi Berra, “You can see a lot just by watching”. So by watching I’ve learned that:

• Careful management of our Society’s affairs by leaders before me has been exemplary and inspired. We have grown in number and diversity, achieved financial stability and increased our ability to enhance members’ practice lives. SCCDS maintains a continuing commitment to addressing the critical needs of every member.
• I’ve learned our committees and board are responsive to membership and accountable for our work and are open and transparent in decision making.
• I know our desire as health care providers to give and grow far surpasses what we request and take.
• And, I am certain there will never be a perfect meeting, but this won’t stop us from trying to have one!

In my year as President I hope to capitalize on our willingness to serve and partner with our newly formed Foundation for increased outreach and community service. I want to strengthen committees with greater participation and activity. I know that the more I give the more I get back and want to encourage the membership to do the same.

So, it is with gratitude I accept the office of President of the Santa Clara County Dental Society. I do so with a deep respect for the trust invested in me and I commit to meeting to the best of my ability all the responsibilities expected of me as leader of this distinguished Society. I am mindful of the rare privilege but demanding obligations bestowed upon me by becoming the holder of this office.

So, as my first official duty of office, I’ll just say: Let the games begin!
