TDIC History Product of a crisis TDIC is the product of a crisis that seized the health care industry more than 20 years ago. In the mid-1970s professional liability insurers suddenly began raising rates dramatically for dentists and physicians. In some states, including California, insurers began abandoning the market altogether. A bold strategy By the late 1970s, California dentists faced a potentially enormous increase in premiums as well as the possible departure of the state's last remaining professional liability insurer. The California Dental Association responded with a bold strategy: establishing a professional liability insurer owned by dentists. Most successful The California Dental Association incorporated The Dentists Insurance Company in November 1979 as a wholly-owned subsidiary. TDIC's first policy took effect on July 1, 1980. By 1994, TDIC was rated "A" (excellent) by the A. M. Best Company, America's leading insurance rating firm. Today, TDIC is by far the nation's most successful dentist-owned professional liability insurer. They insure over 14,000 dentists, including the members of the California, Hawaii, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania dental associations, the Illinois State Dental Society, and the Alaska Dental Society. They also insure dentists in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, New Mexico, and North Dakota. | | Anna Badger | Expansion To date they have obtained authorization to offer coverage in 36 states.
