Most Frequently Asked Questions: What function does 1201 have in the CDA-sponsored insurance program? 1201 is the licensed broker/administrator for all the CDA-sponsored insurance plans. They market, sell and service the 12 CDA-sponsored plans. How does 1201 decide which insurance carriers to sponsor? Any time CDA makes the decision to sponsor an insurance carrier, the carrier and insurance coverage are reviewed by the CDA Council on Insurance (COI) with input from 1201 and the COIs insurance consultant. What is the COI? The COI is made up of 7 practicing dentists who meet regularly to review the CDA-sponsored insurance programs performance. The current COI consists of the following dentists: Martyn S. Green, DDS (Chairman); Thomas W. Campbell, DDS; Ricardo A. Cuevas, DDS; Dennis C. DeTomasi, DDS; David F. Levine, DDS; Marvin S. Waldman, DDS; and Howard J. Winer, DDS. Does 1201 only sell and service CDA-sponsored insurance coverage to CDA dentists? No, 1201 has insurance plans for CDA members' office staff as well as spouses and other relatives. They also offer our insurance products to dental students depending on the type of coverage needed. Are all the CDA-sponsored insurance plans less expensive than insurance coverage I can get through my local broker? Not necessarily, the COI will only approve insurance carriers with an A- or better rating and insurance plans that specifically meet the needs of CDA members. In most instances, but not all, the coverage will be less expensive through special association rates and discounts. Can I just sign-up for any of the 12 CDA-sponsored insurance plans? If you meet the eligibility guidelines, you may enroll in the Hospital Income and Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance coverage, by simply completing a short form application. All other CDA-sponsored insurance plans require underwriting. Only through prudent underwriting by the various carriers will the CDA program remain a stable source of insurance protection for all CDA members. Does 1201 receive commissions from the sale of the CDA-sponsored insurance plans? Yes, 1201 receives industry standard commissions on all the policies they sell. How does 1201 use the commissions they receive? Commissions not used in the regular conduct of 1201 business are returned to CDA to support the many activities of the dental association.
